Les Sylphides De La Rose
2025 Collection from Alexandra King
Somerset based designer, Alexandra King presents a small capsule collection exploring the ballet Les Sylphides, the romance of the rose garden and what magic means today.
The idea of fairies span the world over, throughout history and cultures, often around times of conflict. The Cottingley fairies, 1917 photographs made by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths during the horrors of war, were an inspiring example of creating magic. A magic trick that bought light relief to people worldwide.
Thinking on the world today, a sense of magic lost, how can we believe again?
This collection aims to explore ideas of make believe, play and a subtle wonder in what magic there is in real life.
The wonderful world of Ballet book 1965, The Ballet Russe, Francesca Woodman photographs, Cecil Beaton’s ballet drawings and photographs, Alexey Brodovich’s ballet photobook 1945, The New Look by Christian Dior, 1950s swing coats, Roses in my garden, Langston Hughes, my Nana, my Mother, movement, dance, actually noticing sunbeams for a second, are all inspirations.
Demi couture pieces of the collection are handcrafted in a rose print linen, a forgotten roll found in the depths of the storeroom, and layered with fine tulle creating veils over the roses. In dance, the ballerina silhouettes make ethereal shadows and the ‘Titania’ gown, with delicate winged straps, forms a Queen like presence.
Soft tailoring is made in late 40s cuts and a palazzo trouser suit brings an androgynous swagger to the ballet. Supporting accessories continue the design as embroidered wings, corsages, bags and winged t-shirts all designed and made locally in Somerset.
The Les Sylphides collection is presented in a zine with a series of photographs and illustrations.
